outdoorStudents are exposed to a wide range of experiences outside classrooms that are fun and interactive while complementing student coursework. Experiential programmes are delivered via class outings, year level or school-wide programmes, student clubs or the Young New Zealanders’ Challenge. Nga Tawa’s unique location provides many opportunities within one hour of the school campus.

The Outdoor Education Programme for Years 9 and 10 and The Young New Zealanders’ Challenge brings the outdoors into weekly experiences. In addition to school programmes, adventures recently undertaken by Nga Tawa students include:

  • White-water rafting on the Rangitikei
  • Bungy jumping at Gravity Canyon
  • Trekking the Tongariro Crossing
  • Skiing on Mt. Ruapehu
  • Kayaking
  • Swimming
  • Rowing on the Whanganui River

Students within the Equestrian Academy regularly ride in groups along remote North Island west coast beaches and the School’s unique proximity to a number of Rangitikei hill and bush trek locations provides students with adventures throughout the region.

Nga Tawa connects students with outdoors so that they will:

  • Learn about their natural surroundings
  • Become educated on physical survival
  • Develop superior problem-solving skills
  • Enhance team working skills
  • Challenge their mental and physical abilities
  • Develop confidence and leadership skills
