"Boarding life at this school is enhanced by: encouragement for students to develop a good work ethic, life skills and become increasingly independent learners[and] opportunities to live alongside a cross-section of young women and develop skills required for good relationships."
ERO 2010
Nga Tawa’s International Exchange programme provides a culturally rich and beneficial learning environment for Nga Tawa students. It enables selected exchangees to recognise the value of cultural differences, to accept diverse human perspectives, to become confident communicators and effective global citizens. The School enjoys many exchanges with girl’s schools in Australia, Japan and the United States with an ongoing initiative to broaden this network allowing our students more choice. European Exchange Programmes are being investigated in both the United Kingdom and Italy.
Australia
Each year in Term Two, up to ten Nga Tawa Year 10 students participate in an Australasian Exchange Programme to Anglican girls schools in Brisbane, Southport, Sydney and Adelaide. Simultaneously, Nga Tawa hosts ten Australian students. Families of Nga Tawa students abroad adopt an Australian daughter for the term to experience life in New Zealand. School fees are paid as usual with ‘extras’ negotiated between the families.
Japan
Each year two Year 10 students arrive from Kunei Girl’s High School in Japan.
USA
Nga Tawa maintains exchanges with both The Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee and The Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Connecticut. The North American Exchange is open to Year 12 students and lasts for six weeks, with four weeks in the Christmas holidays and two weeks at the beginning of Term One. In 2010, four Nga Tawa students travelled to the USA. Students from the American schools also attend Nga Tawa between 10 June and 20 July, during their summer break in the USA. Other USA exchanges are being investigated to expand future American opportunities.
