Roz has been the Principal of Nga Tawa Diocesan School since January, 2002. Supported by two very energetic and collegial Boards of Trustees, Roz has led the school through a period of significant improvement. Building on a 119 year history as one of New Zealand's finest girls' schools, Roz has created a culture of excellence and innovation, in addition to introducing several global initiatives for students.
Ongoing upgrades have been completed to many facilities in both the day and boarding schools. 100 acres of park like grounds have also been developed to form an attractive living and learning environment for boarders from throughout NZ and overseas. A world class Equestrian Academy is also a major draw card, while Nga Tawa's location and proximity to ski fields and extreme sports encourages active engagement in ‘experiential' learning, building self confidence and courage in students.
Nga Tawa has enjoyed a national reputation for academic excellence over many years. NCEA pass rates are consistently 97% - 100%, with endorsements well above the national average for decile 10 girls' schools. The International Baccalaureate Diploma programme has also been offered successfully since 1997 and the IB philosophy underpins daily practice.
Student leadership initiatives have also been a special focus and a full menu of these can be viewed under leadership on this website. Two extremely popular options for students are the Year 10, Australasian Exchange Programme and the recently introduced Year 12, North American Exchange Programme. Big Sisters, Peer Mediators, Y.E.S, Year 11 leadership positions; the student council and Prefect's positions also hone leadership ability.Application and the selection for school based leadership opportunities remain rigorous and mirror recruitment beyond school.
Nga Tawa is a global school in its thinking and planning and enjoys international connections with over 3000 IB schools. It is also a member of the Alliance of Girls' Schools, Australasia (AGSA), providing staff and students with networking opportunities and an international appreciation of girls' education. Roz Mexted is currently the elected, New Zealand Principals' representative on the Alliance Executive and the Right Honorable, Dame Jenny Shipley is New Zealand's first Patron of the Alliance of Girls' Schools.
